The Challenge
For the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley, every day is about creating safe, inspiring spaces where young people can grow, learn, and thrive. Serving over 6,700 youth annually across 21 Club sites, their mission is simple but powerful: to enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to realize their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
At the Vestal Club in South Knoxville, that mission is lived out on a special 1.4-acre property filled with opportunities for play, learning, and discovery. Here, children come together on a handicap-accessible playground, play basketball or street hockey on the sports court, plant and tend raised garden beds, and explore the walking path that winds through outdoor play areas. It’s a place where laughter and teamwork echo every afternoon, after school and throughout the summer.
But with that joy comes responsibility. Keeping youth safe is the organization’s highest priority. The old fencing surrounding the sports court had begun to deteriorate, leaving the space vulnerable and less secure. The Boys & Girls Clubs knew they needed a solution that would protect both the children and the space itself.
That solution is the “Safe Play Spaces” project: installing 935 feet of iron fencing around the entire 1.4-acre property, complete with a secure roll-top gate. More than just a boundary, the new fence will give families peace of mind, ensure children have a secure place to play and learn, and protect the recreational areas during evenings and weekends when the Club is closed.
Result
With support from The Valentine Foundation, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley will be able to create a safe, welcoming environment where youth can run, play, learn, and dream without worry. The fence is more than a structure—it’s a promise. A promise that every child who steps onto that playground, onto that court, or into that garden will have the security they need to just be kids.
